Xploring Xterra - 2001 Nissan Xterra

Calmini Builds a Comfortable, Competent Backcountry Rig

Phil HowellWriter

Calmini is a one-stop source for those who own Nissan and Suzuki 4x4s. From mechanical parts to armor, Calmini has those vehicles covered. Steve Kramer, president of Calmini, built his own Nissan Xterra into a hardcore backcountry explorer using mostly—you guessed it—parts from the Calmini warehouse.

Steve’s 2001 Xterra sports a Calmini straight-axle swap, replacing the IFS frontend with a strong Dana 44. Fox 2.0 coilovers up front and Calmini’s long-arm suspension allow the Xterra to handle tough roads and trails with aplomb. Calmini armor and bumpers protect the Xterra. Steve can carry his exploring equipment in the Calmini roof rack/basket, and a rooftop tent from Hannibal ensures restful backcountry nights.

The Xploring Xterra exhibits great road manners and stunning trail performance. It’s a comfortable, competent backcountry explorer, and it makes us want an Xterra. Check out the photos for more.
